The influence of strategic human resource competencies on competitiveness of commercial banks in Kenya; Samson Ole Kisirkoi, Esther Waiganjo, Agnes Njeru; Inter. J. Acad. Stud.  2(8):(2016)367-375

Abstract:
In this study, competiveness is a banks’ ability to persistently surpass performance of its industry rivals. It is thus critical that stakeholders ensure commercial banks do all they can to achieve a high level of long term survival and sustainability. This study focused on the influence of the work force competences on competiveness of commercial banks in Kenya. This study adopted cross-sectional survey research design. The study population was the 43 commercial banks in Kenya. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to gather data. The study established that the influence of strategic human resource competences on competiveness of commercial banks in Kenya was significant at the level of 61.6%. Human resource competences and banks’ competitiveness were found to be positively correlated with a coefficient of 0.829. It was recommended that commercial banks’ top managers enhance and tap into the experience, skills, knowledge, and creativity of their workforce on a continuous basis. This will enable them to keep pace with the changing customer requirements.

Statistical Study on Inter-relationship between Gini index, Pietra index and Coefficient of variation; R. Selvam; Inter. J. Acad. Stud.  2(8):(2016); 376-383

Abstract:
In the rural area of all districts in Tamil Nadu State there exists some inequality between the male and female population. District Size Distribution (DSD) is skewed in nature. Thus, the Pareto model is proposed to study the variability in DSD. The variability of district size distribution in Tamil Nadu State using Gini index, Pietra index and Coefficient of variation based on Pareto model has been studied as per 2011 census data. It is found that there is more variability in female population than male population in rural area of all districts in the state using inequality measures such as Gini index, Pietra index and Coefficient of variation based on Pareto model. As compared the inequality measures it also observed that Pietra index is less than Gini index and Coefficient of variation based on Pareto model.

Influence of Learner-Related Factors on Learners’ School Access and Participation in Central Division of Narok County, Kenya; Florence Kanorio Kisirkoi, Fredrick Odhiambo; Inter. J. Acad. Stud.  2(8):(2016); 384-394

Abstract:
Education plays a critical role in human development yet some learners’ school participation and access in Kenya tend to be inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to establish the learner-related factors that influence learners’ school access and participation in Central Division of Narok County, Kenya. The study was conducted in public primary and secondary schools in central Division of Narok County. Descriptive Survey Research Design was employed and stratified random sampling technique was used to select the schools from the Division. The study respondents were selected using simple random sampling. The sample included 48 teachers, 8secondary school principals, 24 primary school head teachers, 68 class eight pupils and 44form one students. Data was collected using questionnaires. A pilot test was conducted in one secondary and three primary schools. Test-retest reliability method was employed to establish the reliability and stability of the instruments. A correlation co-efficient of 0.77 was obtained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results indicated that physical condition of the learner, use of drugs, learners’ attitude towards school, learners’ age and their maturity, gender influence their access and participation in school. The study recommended promotion of policies and practices that maximize inclusion. Open and flexible practices should be incorporated in curriculum implementation, giving consideration to equity, diversity and opportunity for all learners. Teachers should be empowered through continuous professional development activities such as refresher training to equip them with skills which motivate learners to learn and be retained in school.
